2022 Tiger Year “Tiger”

The session is over, but last week I saw the zodiac exhibition held at the Tokyo National Museum at the beginning of each year. 2022 was the year of the tiger, and many tiger works of art were exhibited.

I would like to summarize what I learned there and what I researched.

God beast “tiger”

“Tiger” has been revered as a “god beast” since ancient times.

In areas where tigers live, such as China and East Asia, tigers are large, ferocious, symbolic of power, and have been worshiped as “mountain gods” and “amulets” as kings of beasts. It is said that it was the beginning of being a sacred beast.

Buddhism and the “tiger”

Tigers also live in India, where Buddhism was born. Various things, such as being a familiar animal and being an object of worship, may have overlapped and became an object to be handed down or drawn along with Buddhist thought.

In Japan, the tiger is also drawn on Tamamushi-Zushi, which is said to be the oldest national treasure of lacquering and the oldest Buddhist painting in Japan.

Tamamushi-Zushi’s painting depicts the story of Buddha’s Previous life, “Shashin-shikozu,” as one of the good deeds.

As Buddha walked in the mountains, he found a starving parent and child tiger at the bottom of the valley. It is a story that Buddha was very merciful and threw himself to the bottom of the valley and made himself a prey to tigers.

In Tamamushi-zushi, it is said that the scene where Buddha takes off his clothes and hangs it on a tree branch, the scene where he throws himself off a cliff and falls, and the tiger swarming on the fallen Buddha are depicted. This story of self-sacrifice is also depicted in Tezuka Osamu’s “Butta”. (In “Butta”, a wolf, not a tiger)

And, the “shashin(捨身)” in this “Shashin-shinko-zu” is also read as “sutemi(捨て身)” in Japanese.

From this story of self-sacrifice, the Japanese word “Sutemi(捨て身)” was used with the positive image of throwing oneself and hitting it with all one’s might. But in practice, in modern times it is not possible to give your life for others. It can be said to be the so-called ultimate form of analogy. Even nowadays, we hear the news that people who helped people died very occasionally. In the book in which this story was written, it was ridiculed that this word was a dead language in the present age when self-priority is valued.

Japanese has changed over time, but I often learn by tracing the meaning. There are teachings that can be understood in all ages, and I think it is important to capture their universal essence even in modern times.

Japanese “tiger”

Tigers do not live in Japan. The image of a brave tiger brought from China to Japan has ink paintings and barriers incorporated into folding screens and craft designs.

In Japan, it is believed that many did not have the opportunity to see a living tiger. It is said that the tiger skin was imported as a representative of Karamono, but it is said that it was used only by some people such as aristocrats and generals. It is believed that the general public at that time did not have the opportunity to see it.

Therefore, it is said that it was sacred as a special animal in Japan.

It is said that the tiger, which would have drawn what was transmitted by imagination, is brave, but the image of a tiger reminiscent of a cat has become widespread. In fact, no one had the experience of being attacked by a tiger, or being eaten or damaged by a tiger, so it may have come closer to the image of a cute cat.

Tiger” in Ukiyo-e

“Tiger” is also drawn in Ukiyo-e. Many of the ukiyo-e paintings on display are landscapes, people, flowers and birds, so the “tiger” seemed a little unusual.

歌川国芳 by Kuniyoshi Utagawa

This ukiyo-e drawn in the Edo period is “Kiyomasa Kato Tiger Hunting” by Kuniyoshi Utagawa.

It is said that the powerful people of the Edo period were obsessed with “immortality and longevity.” Under such circumstances, good food for “immortality and longevity” was the subject of pursuit. Hideyoshi Toyotomi is known as a particularly obsessive person. I don’t think there is any scientific basis at all, but Hideyoshi ordered his vassals to hunt tigers because “tigers” are good for longevity.

There were no tigers in Japan, but it was said that they lived in the neighboring Korean Peninsula at that time. It is said that Kiyomasa Kato, who went to exterminate the tiger, exterminates it and sent Hideyoshi the meat of the tiger. Speaking of tiger extermination, it seems that it was handed down as Kiyomasa Kato. That’s why I think it was also used as an ukiyo-e print.

In fact, Hideyoshi is said to have died of illness. Hideyoshi’s date of birth is still unknown, but he is said to have died at the age of 61 or 62. It is said that most of the Sengoku warlords in the Edo period were around 50 years old, but I think he lived a long time. However, it seems that the tiger effect was not so much.

歌川国芳 by Kuniyoshi Utagawa

This ukiyo-e is one of a series of stories about filial children called “Twenty-four paragons of Filial Piety for Children, Yang”.

Yang is a boy dressed in red. It is said that Yang, who met a tiger in the mountains, bravely heads for the tiger in order to help his father. In the Edo period, it was said that the wind would occur when the tiger barked, and the place where the wind blew was also drawn. Somewhere here the tiger is even depicted as a mysterious beast.

Tiger” of the cat family

In Japan, the “tiger” was far from the real thing, but from the late Edo period to the Meiji period, realistic tigers are drawn from the perspective of natural history.

As the amount of information increases over time, we can see a new approach from the imaginary image to the real tiger.

I’m not sure when it was transmitted that the tiger belongs to the cat family, but I think that the pictures that are conscious of the cat family are cute, and the pictures that are conscious of the fear of the tiger are drawn scary.

In this exhibition, I was able to see various ways of drawing tigers by various people over time. The special exhibition of the Tokyo National Museum at the beginning of each year is a special feature on animals in the zodiac, so if you are interested, please visit the museum next year or next year.
