Iris flower

This time, I investigated a little about the “iris flower” I’m drawing and summarized it.

Plant : Iris

My work is still unfinished, summer is already over, and the season is out of season, but “Iris flower” is one of my favorite plants.

The iris flower is a plant of the Iridaceae family that blooms around May, the origin of Japan, and has an unusual shape peculiar to the Iridaceae family, with three outer sepals hanging down and three inner petals rising.

It grows in swamps and swamps and has been loved by aristocrats in Japan since the Heian period.

In the story of the early Heian period, “The Tales of Ise,” Ariwara no Narihira is famous for poem Waka at a famous spot for iris flowers in Yatsuhashi, Mikawa no Kuni, thinking of his distant wife. The combination of Yatsuhashi and Iris this story is in the opportunity is a famous motifs even today.

The unique purplish blue color of the flowers was also used as the color of the kimono worn in May as a traditional Japanese color that symbolizes the early summer season.

Rinpa school

This iris flower is also one of the flowers that I started to pay attention to after I started studying lacquer work. The year I entered the school in Kyoto was the 300th anniversary of Ogata Korin and the 400th anniversary of the birth of the Kyoto Rinpa school, so the Rinpa exhibition held at the Kyoto National Museum in that year was a great success. I remember waiting an hour to get inside the museum. In addition to the National Museum, there were exhibitions in various places such as shrines and temples in Kyoto City and related exhibitions in the treasure hall, and I enjoyed living in Kyoto by visiting various places every weekend and seeing Rinpa works. It appeared frequently in such Rinpa art works, and what I saw was “Iris flower KAKUTSUBATA”.

What is "Rinpa"?
It refers to a major school represented by Tawaraya Sotatsu, Ogata Korin, and Sakai Hoitsu, who are the three major painters of modern Japanese art. Among them, it is said that it has been called "Sotatsu Korin school" and "Koetsu school" for a long time, but "Rinpa" is widely called after the special exhibition "Rinpa" of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Tokyo National Museum in 1972. It seems that it has come to be done.

Although the Rinpa school is a school, there is no direct teacher-apprentice relationship.
It is said that Korin did not learn directly from Sotatsu, and Hoitsu did not learn directly from Korin, and it was impossible to even learn from different generations. It is said that the founder, Sotatsu, did not have a specific teacher and established his own style of painting.
The Rinpa school is based on Yamato-e, and it is a great attraction that it learns the classics by itself and demonstrates its unique beauty.

Iris flower” in Rinpa work

“Iris flower” often appears in the works of Korin Ogata and Hoitsu Sakai.

Korin’s national treasure, “Yatsuhashi Makie Raden stationary Box,” which was mentioned in the previous post on Abalone Shell, is famous as a lacquer work, but I think many of you know the folding screen,”Byo-bu”.

Nezu-Museum

Korin Ogata’s national treasure, “Irises Byo-bu,” is owned by the Nezu Museum in Tokyo.

This Nezu Museum has a beautiful Japanese garden. And there is a cluster of iris flowers in the garden, which is really beautiful when it is in full bloom, and you will want to visit it every year.

Before the effects of the corona infection, many foreign tourists visited the museum, and there was a year when I shared the excitement with a foreigner who happened to be there, saying, “It’s too beautiful.” I remember.

“Irises” is exhibited once a year at the Nezu Museum, which is the collection of the iris, at the time of the iris in the garden of the museum. It is very popular every year and is lined up before the opening in the morning. People differ depending on whether they see the picture of the folding screen iris first or the real iris in the garden first, but I always look at the real iris first. The iris flowers in the clear air in the morning are really beautiful. And I will see how Korin drew it from there, but it is also interesting because the points I notice each time are different.

Korin drew a folding screen twice with the same theme “Irises” in his 40s and 50s.

The one drawn in the 40s is in the Nezu Museum, and the one drawn in the 50s “Yatsuhashi Folding Screen” is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the United States. The Nezu Museum’s “Irises” does not seem to have a three-dimensional effect when viewed in catalogs. However, in the real thing, you can feel the subtle color difference of the ultramarine blue of the petals of the swallow flower, the painting method, and the bold and lively brush stroke of Korin. The drawing method, composition and arrangement so that the shape of the leaves is not spoiled by the overlapping of the leaves, and the literary elements are omitted while using Yatsuhashi in “Ise Monogatari” as the theme, and it is an extremely abstract design. However, Korin’s unique style has elements that are universally loved regardless of the times, and is highly evaluated.

Iris flower” of Hoitsu

Sakai Hoitsu, who inherited Korin’s Irises, also draws many “Iris flower”.

I especially like how to draw the delicate petals of Hoitsu’s Iris flower, and when drawing “Iris flower”, I refer to Korin’s leaf rhythm and how to draw the overlapping leaves, and Hoitsu’s delicate petals.

Among the works of Hoitsu’s iris flowers, I especially like the iris flowers in the “Four Seasons Flowers and Birds” in the Tokyo National Museum and the iris flowers in the “Twelve Months Flowers and Birds” in the Sannomaru Shozokan of the Imperial Household Agency. If these two works are on display, I will go to see them. It is in my list of works that I go to see many times.

I don’t know when it will be my own, but based on my sensibilities, for example, if the motif is a flower, I decide who to refer to by dividing it into parts such as petals, leaves, and orientation. I go to museums and accumulate and update in my head every day. Since the sensibilities and favorites differ from person to person, it is interesting for me to be able to discover the author’s point of view while looking at the work, wondering if the author wanted to stick to this.

I am looking forward to seeing beautiful iris flowers in the garden slowly next year without the influence of corona in the iris season.
