蒔絵の本 “Maki-e” books

There are far fewer practical books about Maki-e than books that explain lacquering and Fuki-urushi. Most books with lacquer work and titles only have beautiful pictures of the work, and there is no detailed explanation on how to do it.

Under such circumstances, I would like to introduce carefully selected books that are likely to be useful in practice.

It’s not a recent book, so it may be a secondhand book.

日本語の本 Japanese books

「漆芸品の鑑賞基礎知識」小松大秀/加藤寛 著 ,1997 (至文堂)

“Basic knowledge of appreciation of lacquering products” by Taishu Komatsu / Hiroshi Kato, 1997 (Shibundo)

ISBN 4-7843-0160-7

Not all of them specialize in “Maki-e”, but in addition to the basic knowledge of lacquering, this book also contains practical methods. Regarding the cultural properties of Maki-e work, the materials and the estimation process, including the introduction of techniques, are described in great detail. Of the many books on lacquering crafts, this is the one I refer to most. Knowledge of lacquering is condensed in this book.

Of course, due to copyright issues, I can’t introduce the contents, but I’ve put together a few of them in my old notebook, mainly based on this book.

In the book, the process of Maki-e work is explained in a cross-sectional manner in an easy-to-understand manner. I don’t think there are many books that explain the Maki-e work process in detail in this way.

Twenty-five years ago, the list price for books was ¥ 3600 + tax, but recently it has become higher even for used books. However, I think that the amount of information is more than the list price at that time. This is a recommended book.

「漆芸の伝統技法」佐々木 英 著,1987 (オーム社)

“Traditional Techniques of Urushi Art” by Ei Sasaki, 1987 (Ohmsha)

ISBN 978-4-274-05031-2

This book is also a book on lacquering in general, but it has a good explanation of the lacquering process. It’s a 35-year-old book and it’s old. The photos are black and white, and there are many sentences. There is no explanation such as a fragment diagram. However, each process is explained in detail.

In the text, details such as tips and precautions are written. I think this book is full of useful information for those who actually do it. This is a book that I have read over and over again. I also learned Maki-e work at school and put it together in my notebook. I read this book again and again to see if I have forgotten or missed anything in my class at school.

I have read this book and the two books, “The Story of Urushi,” by Gonroku Matsuda, a living national treasure of lacquer work, especially many times. The author of this book, Mr. Sasaki, also studied under Mr. Gonroku Matsuda.

「Maki-e, an art for the soul -The Danitrio Maki-e collection」by DANITRIO, 2003

ISBN 957-9403-07-4

This book is a book specializing in Maki-e work. I haven’t come across any more wonderful Maki-e work books in Japanese. I think the author understands Maki-e work better than the Japanese. And I am deeply grateful to the author for making this book. This is an important book like my treasure.

This book is for collectors and enthusiasts of the American Maki-e fountain pen maker Danitrio. The process of Maki-e work of the Maki-e fountain pen produced so far is described in great detail, including the cross-sectional view, the order of the process, and the number of Maki-e powder used. And the lacquer artists who were involved are also introduced. However, since it is a self-published book, there may be few shops selling it. I bought it at a stationery store that sells Danitrio.

Since it is introduced on the homepage, please contact us directly if you would like to purchase. I will post the link. It is explained in an easy-to-understand manner like the cross section on the homepage.

「Fountain Pens of Japan」Andreas Lambrou and Masamichi Sunami, 2012

ISBN 978-0-9571723-0-2

This book is specialized for Japanese fountain pens, but most of them are lacquered and Maki-e. Various lacquer fountain pens are listed. As for practical techniques, the process of making a self-ordered lacquer fountain pen is shown along with the photos. Not all are explained in detail, but they are very helpful.

Since it is a book that contains various urushi-painting and Maki-e work, I think that there are few books in which you can see various lacquer work in one book.

It is a book that you can get various ideas just by looking at it. I bought it when it was first released more than 10 years ago, but it seems that the price has risen considerably. It is a large book that is quite thick and heavy.

Also, if I find a good book about Maki-e work, I will introduce it.
