It’s like a living 「Twelve Hawks」

Continuing from yesterday’s post, I would like to introduce the works of the Imperial Household Artist of Meiji Crafts. It’s not a lacquer work, but a metal craft, but I think the work is alive and closer to the real thing than Taxidermy.

It is difficult to sketch because various creatures in the world are alive and moving, but the state of being stopped by this transcendental technique of metal crafts is closer, and you can even observe it through the work. I use it as a reference to capture the frame and shape.

I would like to introduce Chokichi Suzuki, a creator who lived in the same era as Shosai Shirayama and can be said to have influenced each other five years older and sooner.

He has won numerous awards at the World’s Fair and his achievements have been wonderful. However, Suzuki Chokichi himself has a simple and quiet personality, and it is often unknown that his disciples have not heard of it, and there is no record of his later activities. It is probable that he was in a standing industry and trading company at the same time as Shirayama Shosai. I think he worked hard as the same imperial artist. Suzuki Chokichi, who lived in Saitama Prefecture, seems to have lived in the same ward of my hometown of Tokyo, and I’m looking forward to new discoveries and related exhibitions at local museums.

Twelve hawks”

1893 Chicago Expo

This “Twelve Hawks” was exhibited at the Chicago World’s Fair and won the Memorial Award. It was devised by Tadamasa Hayashi, who was an interpreter for a standing industry and trading company that specialized in producing and exporting crafts for export at that time in order to inform the value of Japanese art overseas.

Why hawk?

In the long history of Japanese art, the most preferred and excellently expressed subject is birds, and the motif is the noblest hawk among birds.

Elements as a hawk motif

Sharp eyes
Powerful nails
Agility
Sublime
Power

Hawks have long been favored by aristocrats who enjoy falconry through training. There are 48 habitats in Japan, and during the Tokugawa Shogunate era, nearly 60 young hawks were captured and trained from those areas, and the 12 best-growing hawks were selected for the shogun’s falconry. There was a ritual. From that, the number of “Twelve Hawks” is said to be twelve.

Observation and restoration of hawks

Chokichi Suzuki kept many hawks himself for the production of this “Twelve hawks” and lived together while consulting with a falconry expert, a falconer, to understand his habits and body structure. The ritual of this shogun was restored based on old materials, literature, and masterpieces. The prototype is made from wax, cast in bronze, colored gold is applied by engraving techniques such as inlaying, and the color is raised unique to Japan. It is expressed by the difference in colored gold that has been used since ancient times. It is said that 24 people with the highest technology in each field worked on the production over 4 years after repeated trial production. This work is said to have been made “without sparing money, time, and effort.”

There were so many people in the exhibition at that time that I didn’t take pictures of each hawk.

Culture that connects hawks to a rack with a string

Hawks are very sensitive birds, so from ancient times, when hawks were tied to a rack with a string, the shape of the knot of the string was given a meaning to distinguish them. It seems that this developed and when showing the hawk to Aristocrat, the color of the string was changed according to the season and the type of hawk. This braid is also one of the special traditional crafts.

By the way, the hawk rack of “Twelve Hawks” is lacquered, and has a shiny mirror surface and a roiro-urushi finish suitable for this hawk. Of course, the hawk is the main character, but the ones that complement the main characters other than the hawk are also made with great care.

The holdings of “Twelve Hawks”

National Crafts Museum, National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (now Kanazawa)

The photo I posted this time was taken when the National Crafts Museum of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo was in Tokyo. After being exhibited at the Crafts Museum, it was designated as a national important sentence designated property in 2019.

With the relocation of the Crafts Museum to Kanazawa in 2020, “Twelve Hawks” are now in their possession and are no longer in Tokyo, reducing the chances of my personal encounters.

However, the power of the work made without sparing money, time and effort cannot be expressed in words, it is just amazing. It is a work that makes you feel the behavior, breathing, and spirit of the hawk. It is one of Japan’s proud important cultural properties that everyone wants to see once in a lifetime.

Chokichi Suzuki’s work that can be seen in Tokyo

The hawk has gone to Kanazawa, but you can see the eagle made by Suzuki Chokichi in the 18th room of the Tokyo National Museum. Like the hawk, this eagle is a living figurine.

The high degree of perfection, from the figure, the engraving of the details of the feathers, to the invisible parts that are obscured, is truly a transcendental technique. I have seen it many times, and every time I took a picture.

Like Shosai Shirayama, Chokichi Suzuki is very happy and proud to be the same Japanese.

If you are interested, please go see it.
