The weakness of lacquer Urushi is for the earth

So far, I have posted a lot about the charm of lacquer and lacquer. Basically, I don’t want to write just criticisms or negatives.

However, in order to understand lacquer correctly, I think it is necessary to have correct knowledge of weaknesses.

This time, I would like to summarize the weaknesses of the lacquer.

Weaknesses of lacquer

The weakness of lacquer is not so much that it is generally said to be “difficult to handle”.

Lacquer ware made of natural lacquer is extremely robust because a thin and durable coating of lacquer covers the substrate in multiple layers. The evidence shows the remains of lacquer ware from the Jomon period. The fact that it is in a state where it can be seen that it has been lacquered even after standing for nearly 10,000 years is the proof above all.

In other words, the weaknesses of lacquer that I will introduce are not overly sensitive if you take a little care.

There are three major weaknesses.

Sunburn
Dry
Inundation for a long time

Sunburn due to sunlight / ultraviolet rays

When the lacquer coating is exposed to sunlight (especially ultraviolet rays) ↓

  1. The action of light causes rapid oxidation by oxygen in the air at the double bond of the important part that connects the central part of urushiol on the surface.
  2. Urushiol is disassembled
  3. Gradually spans the entire organization
  4. The entire coating film breaks
  5. It becomes cloudy white because rubber that does not decompose with ultraviolet rays remains.

There is no problem with normal use as long as it is not exposed to ultraviolet rays for a very long period of time.

If the surface of the paint film is lightly tanned, it can be restored by polishing.
If it looks terrible, the paint film surface can be repainted.

Lacquer cultural properties such as shrines and temples are exposed to the outside, and the frequency of repainting is said to be once every 5 to 10 years.

If the surface of the paint film is lightly tanned, you can polish the surface of the paint film with Suri-urushi, and the self-renewal function of the lacquer will restore the luster.

In most cases, it can be used without throwing it away.

Dry

Especially when it is a wooden base of lacquer ware

The base wood shrinks due to drying
Cracks occur in the lacquer coating

Just as humans feel sick in a dry environment with air conditioning, so does lacquer ware.

An environment that is comfortable for humans is also a comfortable environment for lacquer ware.

There is no problem unless it is left in a dry place for a long time.

Inundation for a long time

When the lacquer coating is soaked in water for a long time …

Water gets inside the membrane
The structure of the coating film becomes loose
Oxidative decomposition of urushiol by oxygen in water occurs
The paint film breaks

If only the broken layer of the paint film is removed, it will return to its original state.
There is no problem if it is not a long time

It is easy to think that it is difficult to handle if it is left immersed in water, but it takes a long time for the entire lacquer coating to break. Even if I used lacquer ware for dinner and then soaked it in water and forgot to wash it overnight, it was all right. (From my experience)

The lacquer coating is stronger, but it is the same as if a person is soaked in the bath for too long, he or she will feel sick.

Taking advantage of this property, if lacquer is attached to something that has not been grounded with lacquer, such as pottery or glass plate, and it dries as it is, the lacquer will come off cleanly if it is left in water for about 2 days.

Just as humans take a bath and wash their bodies in their daily lives, it is best to use lacquer ware regularly because it is polished by the hands of the user.

If you treat lacquer like a living thing, it will answer the user as much as you value it.

This is a bit like a fountain pen nib, and I think that’s the point I’m addicted to in the world of lacquer.

Weakness is due to the global environment

The weaknesses mentioned so far can be said to be favorable properties for the global environment.

Return to nature

The essence of lacquer, which is perceived as a weakness, is the definition of lacquer as a creature in the natural world to return to nature.

Lacquer ware will break the lacquer coating if exposed to light, but it does not sprinkle harmful substances. It does not pollute the air, does not become a large amount of garbage, and returns to the soil.

It can be said that it is a very eco-friendly raw material.

Those using lacquer can be used for a long time, and if necessary, they can be cured by repainting or repairing.

Even if it is decided to throw it away, the lacquer itself will return naturally.

The daily use of lacquer products can be said to be an act that is kind to nature.

Eco-friendly in all processes

Lacquer is “lacquer scraping” when collecting lacquer as a raw material → refining → painting → drying until it becomes a product and is used by people↓

  • No chemicals needed
  • No harmful substances are released into the atmosphere
  • No energy needed
  • Humidity and temperature are required, but if you choose the season, it will be solved in the natural energy of the sun

It does not invade the global environment from raw materials to disposal after use.

It can be said that it is a safe and secure material.

In fact, chemical paint manufacturers around the world are studying the solidification mechanism of lacquer and even trying to get closer to lacquer.

Considering that the weakness is for the earth, I think that lacquer is amazing.

It can be said that it is the best material for the present age when global environmental issues are discussed.

I hope that as many people as possible will consider incorporating lacquer products into their daily lives for the sake of the earth.
