Nanako-nuri+Raden+Togidashi-Makie

This time, I would like to write on my blog the story of my first experience with Nanako-nuri.

Actually, I have experience in Makie, but I don’t have much experience in Kawari-nuri. Both the world of painting (Nuri) and the world of Maki-e (Decoration) are deep and very difficult. I think that if I put too much effort into painting(Nuri), I’m addicted to the swamp and can’t come back to Makie. For that reason, I know the actual method as knowledge, but there are many techniques I have never done.

I am very grateful to have had a valuable experience this time due to the request for custom-ordered products.

Basically, Nanako-nuri is the same as the work of sharpening Makie, but I was very nervous when I tried it for the first time. I couldn’t afford to take the video, so I would like to look back on the photos.

Tsugaru Nuri Four Great Techniques

From the exhibition at Hirosaki Municipal Tourist Hall

Nanako-nuri is one of the four major techniques of Tsugaru-nuri, a traditional technique in the Tsugaru region of Aomori prefecture, which is the northeastern part of Japan. There are so many types of Tsugaru Nuri itself. It is a traditional craft that has a long history and has continued since the middle of the Edo period. And the following four are considered to be representatives that are transmitted even in modern times.

Kara-nuri
Nanako-nuri
Nishiki-nuri
Monsha-nuri

Basically, Tsugaru Nuri is a “sharpening various coating (Togidashi-kawari-nuri)” in which the surface of lacquer that has been applied many times is sharpened smoothly to express a pattern. Applying lacquer many times takes time. Tsugaru Nuri is highly evaluated as a robust coating due to the thickness of the lacquer layer, and its technique is also certified as a national intangible cultural property.

Nanako-nuri

From the exhibition at Hirosaki Municipal Tourist Hall

Nanako-nuri “Nanako” seems to mean “fish child (Nano-ko)”.

The round ring pattern of a small rapeseed is reminiscent of a fish egg, so it is called “fish child (Nanoko)” and the word “fish child (Nanoko→Nanako) ” was applied.

The history of Nanako-nuri does not originate from Tsugaru-nuri (Tsugaru region), and its origin is unknown. The name “Nanako” was discovered in the craft specimen “Hyakuko Hisho” of the Kaga feudal clan (currently Ishikawa Prefecture) during the Edo period. For that reason, it is said that it may be a technique that has been passed down from other regions.

Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture

Tsugaru Nuri is a traditional craft that is currently produced in Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture.

Actually, I once went to Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture. At the site, there was an experience of sharpening Tsugaru-nuri chopsticks. I searched online and found out that the craftsmen could teach me directly, so I went there. I was able to spend a very meaningful time because I was able to hear various stories from the craftsmen.

I experienced it at “Tsugaru-han Neputa Village”. It seems that they are still doing it, so if you are interested, please go. There are various other experiences, and it is also recommended as a tourist attraction.

Then, I visited several secondhand bookstores in Hirosaki City, asked the owner to put out old books of “Tsugaru Nuri”, and bought some of them and went home. This time, I also referred to the book at that time and the experience at that time.

The roots of the lacquer ware producing area in the Tohoku region were also covered in a previous post. If you are interested, please read it together.

The actual technique

The Nanako-nuri I tried this time is Nanako in terms of using rapeseed. But to be exact, of course, it is not “Tsugaru-Nuri”. The true Tsugaru-nuri uses a wooden base (Hiba tree from Aomori prefecture) as the base material, and uses a process called “hon-kataji” as the base material. There are various strict regulations such as traditional techniques, raw materials, and formation of production areas to call yourself “Tsugaru Nuri”.

If you would like to purchase the true “Tsugaru-Nuri”, please purchase it at the place of origin or a dealer of authorized certified products.

I have also posted about the groundwork in the past, so please read it as well.

This time, I would like you to understand correctly that I tried a part of the process of Nanako-nuri, which is one of the representative techniques of Tsugaru-nuri.

素地 Groundwork

I would like to spell out what I actually did this time in order.

The product requested this time is a fountain pen, so the material is resin. Basically, if the surface to be painted is roughened, the lacquer will bite and the paint will be fixed. Its compatibility varies slightly depending on the material and lacquer. The substrate itself this time was in a state where there were grooves at regular intervals throughout the aspect of the shaft.

The request this time is as follows ↓

Part of the painting
Raden
Kawari-nuri

In any case, it is a technique of sharpening, but a smooth base is necessary as a major premise before sharpening. In particular, it was necessary to fill the groove in order to attach a shell of a certain size to the shell, not a fine shell.

At the same time, I filled the clip holes with lacquer.

I applied black lacquer repeatedly from the whole → only the groove → the whole. This time, the groove was very deep, so I repeated lacquer application and sharpening about 20 times for about 2 months to smooth the substrate and put the shellfish on it.

If there is no groove, I don’t think the undercoat will be that much. I could also fill the groove with Sabi-urushi, but this time I plan to use shellfish, and because I don’t want to make it that thick, I did it steadily with lacquer.

For the clip window, I layered lacquer on the inside side part about 20 times, and when the hole was filled, I filled it with Sabi-urushi. Since the hole is deeper than the groove, I used rust lacquer here. And since I layered lacquer 5 more times, it was buried quite firmly.

Smoothing is basically sharpening work, using Suruga charcoal. In my case, all sharpening basically uses charcoal. I sharpened it by changing the softness and hardness in Suruga charcoal as needed.

Raden

Shellfish cutting

The shellfish used for Raden was cut vertically with a knives to a width of about 1 mm. Then, after cutting vertically, I judged the direction of shining up and down and selected each one.

The slanting condition of the tip is different one by one, so I used up each chisel to match it and checked it together.

Also, this time, I used the part of the shellfish with a blue tint.

Shellfish pasting

Paste on curved surface
The shape of the tip of the shellfish is different

For the above reasons, I checked and pasted one by one instead of pasting them all at once.

If the shellfish is floating even after placing it, say “Wari” and make a cut in the middle. I pasted it carefully while checking it, so I didn’t paste everything in one day and divided it into several times.

Shellfish edge coating

After pasting it, I carefully checked if there were any floating parts after it had dried.

With a thin brush (black lacquer), the edges of the shellfish were trimmed and dried, and repeated 3 times. This time, the partial cross section was designed as a shellfish, so I made a firm edging to protect the cross section of the shellfish.

Also, if I use this edging when I can paint the entire surface, the rate of chipping of corners during sharpening will be reduced.

Lacquer surface coating other than shellfish

The thickness of the shellfish this time was about 0.09 to 0.10 mm, which was a little thicker.

Therefore, there is a considerable difference between the height of the shell and the height of the lacquer surface. This time, I will also apply Nanako-nuri, so I left that amount and applied black lacquer twice on the lacquer surface where the shells were not pasted, and brought it a little closer to the height.

After that, it was sharpened to some extent and smoothed.

Nanako-nuri

From the exhibition at Hirosaki Municipal Tourist Hall

After getting a rough idea of the height of the Raden shell and the height of the lacquer made from the rapeseed of Nanako-nuri, I applied the Tane-urushi. (If it is a normal Nanako-nuri, it is the process after the middle coat sharpening is finished.)

Taneurushi-nuri

This time, I used light blue colored lacquer because I wanted the ring of the ring pattern to look like a bubble of water.

After putting out the lacquer, I stirred it with a spatula to make it slightly viscous. (The lacquer used here is called “Tane-urushi”)

Then, I applied light blue lacquer to the whole area except the shells with a brush. I tried to make it even by passing the brush over and over again so that there would be no accumulation as much as possible.

It was written in the bibliography as follows. (summary)

The ring gets bigger
Too thick → The rings may be connected
Become a small, thin ring

After applying, leave it until there are no brush marks when applying.

Sowing seeds

For the rapeseed, I prepared a selection of relatively beautiful round rapeseed, excluding dregs and chips.

It was confirmed that the brush marks of the coating were gone and that the coating was even.

Then, rapeseed was sown from above to a certain height.

After sowing, it was dried in a place with a certain humidity (60% -70%).

Seed removal

Using the tip of a spatula, lightly bite the spatula diagonally along the seeds (at an angle of about 15 degrees) with a light force, and peel off the rapeseed. By the way, it seems that the standard for drying seeds is 30 hours or more at a temperature of 20 ° C and a humidity of around 85%.

The part after peeling was in a dry state, so I dried it as it was. At this time, it was written in the book that if the seed skin etc. remained, it should be removed, but this time it was peeled off cleanly, so it was not necessary.

In the normal process, it seems that the uneven part of the ring pattern is sharpened and flattened after it is thoroughly dried. I didn’t do this this time. Since I will sow the powder of Maki-e, I added the method of Maki-e work from here.

Black lacquering

This time, before sprinkling the Maki-e powder, I applied Kuro-roiro Urushi once on the uneven part with the ring pattern and checked the unevenness of the surface.

Here, I especially saw the height of the Raden shell and the height of the unevenness of the ring pattern. In the reference, it was stated that the unevenness of the ring pattern should be sharpened again before painting. However, this time I thought that if I sharpened it here, there would be a difference in height from the shellfish, so I proceeded to the next without sharpening.

Ground coating and powder sprinkling

The photo is after powder harden.

After that, I applied a very thin layer of Kuroroiro-urushi and sprinkled Hirame-fun No. 4 silver powder / gold powder and Maru-fun No. 11.

(Maki-e powder has been covered in past posts, so if you are interested, please read it as well.)

The amount (thickness) of sprinkling the three types of powder was changed from bottom to top for the barrel and from top to bottom for the pod. I wanted this to be an expression in which the water bubbles of the ring crest were smoldering.

Powder Harden 2 times

This is the process of fixing the sprinkled powder.

After it had dried completely, it was applied twice with Kijiro-urushi (Akaroiro-urushi). This powder Harden was painted separately so that it would not be applied to the shell part.

The first time, I diluted Kijiro-urushi with turpentine until it became a juice and applied it.

The second time, the degree of dilution was less than the first time, and the part where the powder was dense was applied a little thicker.

After the powder was hardened, it was thoroughly dried in a wet room at 25 ° C and 85%.

Apply Urushi “Nuri-kome”

In the Tsugaru-nuri reference, it was written that it was “Nurikomi” + 3 times of painting. In other words, it seems that the painting is done at least 4 times.

This time, after stripping the seeds, I applied it once with Kuroro-urushi and twice with hardening powder, so I applied it once with a thick coat.

After applying a thick coat of the whole, including the shellfish, I repeated horizontal and vertical placement. I checked carefully whether it was painted thicker by the thickness of the shellfish. I adjusted it on an hourly basis without taking my eyes off for about a day and a half so that it would not shrink. Then, after drying it well, I started sharpening.

Sharpening / polishing

This is the longest and most tense task. It doesn’t take long to apply, but once the lacquer is applied, it takes a long time to sharpen it once it dries.

The sharpening was done slowly for many days, checking the dryness very carefully.

After smoothing the whole with Suruga charcoal and polishing it to some extent, it will move to Roiro charcoal. Suri-urushi is applied between sharpening. At the stage of Roiro charcoal, sharpen while carefully checking whether the scratches on the sharpening have disappeared. After that, Suri-urushi and polishing were applied to finish. After that, there were still irregularities and holes in the cross section of the shellfish, so I filled it with lacquer, dried it, sharpened it a little, and polished it repeatedly.

This is the so-called Togidashi-Makie work process. It has been covered in past posts, so please read it if you are interested in it in detail. It also covers Suri-urushi. I will post a link here as well.

It was a day of trial and error, such as the strength of sharpening and the degree of polishing. However, when it was completed, the Nanako ring pattern was nicely formed like a bubble of water, and the brilliance of the shellfish was beautiful and the finish was nice.

This time, I had a valuable experience because it was the first time for me to smooth the grooved surface and to use Raden and Kawari-nuri together. I am deeply grateful to the client for giving me such an opportunity.

Also, all the methods introduced here are my personal methods. The detailed method is different for every person who handles urushi. I would appreciate it if you could use it as a reference only.

Some of the photos used this time are from the Hirosaki Municipal Tourist Center. Those who are interested in Tsugaru Nuri are a little far away, but please do go. The exhibition at Hirosaki Municipal Tourist Center explains the long Tsugaru-nuri process in great detail. It’s a place I’m glad I went to because I learned a lot.
