川瀬巴水 Kawase Hasui

「旅情の版画家」「昭和の広重」と呼ばれた明治・大正・昭和の時代に生きた川瀬巴水という浮世絵師・版画家をご存知ですか？

Do you know an ukiyo-e artist named Hasui Kawase who lived in the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras, who was called “the printmaker of travel” and “Hiroshige of the Showa era”?

先日、川瀬巴水のゆかりの地、東京都の大田区郷土博物館開催の「川瀬巴水」展に行ってきました。入館料無料で撮影可という大変良心的で学芸員の方や地元の方々の巴水作品への敬愛を感じる展示内容、心温まる展覧会でしたので、展覧会レポートも兼ねて川瀬巴水の魅力をご紹介したいと思います。

The other day, I wet to the Kawase Hasui Exhibition held at the Ota-ku Folk Museum in Tokyo, a place related to Hasui Kawase.The exhibition was very conscientious, with no admission fee, and it was a heartwarming exhibition with respect for Hasui’s works by curators and locals.Therefore, I would like to introduce the charm of Hasui Kawase as well as my exhibition report.

川瀬巴水の知名度 Hasui’s popularity

日本ではあまり知られていないような気がしますが、私も巴水の存在は存じ上げず、お世話になっている蒔絵師の先生に勧められたのがきっかけで作品を見に行きました。

I don’t think it’s well known in Japan now, but I didn’t know the existence of Hasui, and I wet to see the work after being recommended by a senior Maki-e artist I knew.

海外での評価は非常に高く巴水の作品であれば総て揃えたいというコレクターもいるそうです。またアメリカのバージニア美術館では巴水作品はほぼ総て揃っているのではないかと言われているほどです。誰もが知る有名人をあげればアップル社の創業者スティーブ・ジョブズがコレクションしていたそうです。それがきっかけで日本での知名度も上がったと言われています。

However, it is highly evaluated overseas, and some collectors want to have all of Hasui’s works.In addition, it is said that Hasui’s works are almost all in the collection at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in the United States.The well-known celebrity Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple Inc., was also in the collection.It is said that this has led to an increase in popularity in Japan.

新版画とは。。。
「近世の浮世絵に囚われない、芸術を本位として画家の個性を発露する新しい版画」
大正時代に版元である渡邊庄三郎によって創始されました。

What is "new Ukiyo-e woodblock print"?
「A new woodblock print that reveals the individuality of the painter with art as the focus, without being bound by Edo's Ukiyo-e」
It was founded by Shozaburo Watanabe, the publisher in the Taisho era of Japan

浮世絵といえば今や、海外に高く評価された日本美術を代表とするものですが、現代までに時代の流れと印刷技術や写真の登場、発展と共に衰退していきました。そんな中、伝統的な木版画技術の復興と版画普及活動の熱意と制作により素晴らしい新版画作品が生み出されています。

Ukiyo-e is now representative of Japanese art, which has been highly acclaimed overseas, but by the present day it has declined with the passage of time, printing technology, the appearance and development of photographs.Meanwhile, wonderful new Ukiyo-e woodblock print works have been created by the revival of traditional woodblock printing techniques and the enthusiasm and production of woodblock print promotion activities.

巴水作品は主に風景画です。しっかりとした細かな描写と写生、版画にするために吟味され削ぎ落とされた線、巴水の描いた線を極限まで活かす彫り師と巴水の世界観を実現するための摺師の妥協ない仕事への熱意と同じ方向を向くチームワークあってこその素晴らしい仕事で、それがあってこそ多くの人を魅了するのだと思います。

Hasui’s works are mainly landscape paintings.A compromise between a carver who makes the best use of the lines drawn by Hasui and the sculptor who realizes the world view of Hasui.It’s a wonderful job because of teamwork that goes in the same direction as the enthusiasm for a job, and I think that’s what attracts many people.

また新版画は近代化した風景をただ画題として描かれているのではなく、どこか江戸情緒や懐かしさを感じるもので歌川広重とよく比較されたそうですが、巴水自身は模倣追随はしておらず日本の風土と文化という環境が生み出す、日本人としての感性からくるものではないかと思ってみたりします。しっかりと日本の伝統の基礎を大事に革新を遂げた版画であるともいえます。

In addition, the Ukiyo-e new woodblock prints are not just drawn with the modernized landscape as the subject, but somehow feel the Edo atmosphere and nostalgia, and were often compared with Hiroshige Utagawa.However, Hasui himself does not imitate Hiroshige, and I think it comes from the Japanese sensibility created by the environment of Japanese culture.It can be said that it is a woodblock print that has firmly innovated the foundation of Japanese tradition.

大正12年の関東大震災により、お店が全焼し、作品や版木のほとんどが失われ、また一からのスタートと大変な時代を経て今残っている本当に貴重な作品を拝見できることはとてもありがたいです。そして戦争のあった悲しく激動の時代に生きた、到底言葉には言い表せないような巴水の思いなど作品からも日本の歴史を学ぶ機会を与えてくださっています。

The store was completely destroyed by the Great Kanto Earthquake in the Taisho era, and most of the works and woodblocks were lost. I am very grateful to be able to see the truly valuable works that remain after such a difficult time.And in the sad and turbulent times of the war, he gives us the opportunity to learn about Japanese history from his works, such as Hasui’s thoughts, which cannot be expressed in words.

生まれ故郷：東京 Hometown : Tokyo

巴水の生まれ故郷は東京で、巴水作品のシリーズには『東京十二題』『東京十二ヶ月』『東京二十景』などはその名の通り、東京を題材として描いています。必ずしも名所を描いたというのではなくその時々の感情が赴くままに筆を下ろしたとされています。

Hasui’s birthplace is Tokyo, and as the name suggests, “Twelve titles in Tokyo”,”Twelve months in Tokyo”, and “twenty views of Tokyo” are drawn with Tokyo as the theme in the series of Hasui works.Hasui did not necessarily draw a famous place, but it is said that he wrote down the brush as his emotions went.

それがまた、なんとも巴水の時代の昔の絵であってもどこか今にもあるようで懐かしく見る人の中にある思い出さえ引き出すような風景画です。

It’s also an old painting from the Hasui era, but it seems to be somewhere in the past, and it’s nostalgic, and it even brings out the memories in the viewer.

前期と後期両方行ったのですが、前期では撮影可とは知らずに撮りませんでした。東京のものはあまり撮っていませんでしたので、個人的にも巴水作品の中でも大好きな富士山を載せます。

I went to both the first half and the second half, but I didn’t shoot in the first half without knowing that it was possible to shoot. I didn’t take many pictures of Tokyo, so I will post my favorite Mt. Fuji.

旅先の風景画 Landscape painting of the destination

巴水の『旅みやげ』シリーズは人気のシリーズの一つです。

Hasui’s “Travel Souvenir” series is a popular series.

コロナ感染症の影響で、あっという間に世界が変わり旅に行くのも大変な時代に逆戻りしてしまいました。そんな今に、巴水の作品は今まで行った旅先の思い出を蘇らせたり、いつか行ってみたいと思える情緒あふれる風景画ばかりです。特に神社仏閣の風景は日本では今でもそのままのところが多いのではないかと思いますので巴水作品を片手に巡っても楽しいなと思ったりします。

Due to the effects of corona infection, the world changed in a blink of an eye, and we have returned to difficult time to travel. Nowadays, Hasui’s works are all landscape paintings that bring back memories of the destinations I’ve been to and make me want to go someday. In particular, the scenery of shrines and temples is still often the same in Japan, so I think it’s fun to go around while watching Hasui’s works.

当時は、きっと中々日本には来れない外国の方々は巴水の眼を通して見る未知の日本という国に思いを馳せたのかもしれません。

At that time, foreigners who couldn’t come to Japan might have thought of the unknown country of Japan seen through Hasui’s eyes.

巴水作品の水表現・光と影 Water expression, light and shadow of Hasui’s work

巴水は特に水辺の風景を好んだとされ、川辺や海辺などの風景画が多いです。

Hasui is said to have particularly liked the scenery of the waterside, and there are many landscape paintings of the riverside and the seaside.

加えて 雨・雪・風などの表現は湿度の高い日本の空気感を感じさせます。そして光と影のコントラストが見事で見た瞬間で時刻を認識し、見ていると包み込まれるような世界観は他の浮世絵とはまた違う巴水独自の世界です。

In addition, expressions such as rain, snow, and wind make you feel the atmosphere of Japan with high humidity.And, the contrast between light and shadow is wonderful in Hasui’s work, and the world view that recognizes the time at the moment of seeing the work and is wrapped up when looking at it is a world unique to Hasui that is different from other Ukiyo-e.

また一枚の画にすごく色々なものが詰まっていてそこに引き込まれる感覚、風景に全てを語らせる手法というのがずっと見ていたくなる人間の五感に訴えるものがあり、魅了される一因だとも思います。

Also , there are so many different things in one picture, and the method of letting the picture tell everything is something that appeals to the five senses of human beings that you want to see for a long time, and I think that is one of the reasons why you are fascinated.

図録の写真を見ているだけでも巴水の世界観を感じられますが、色味や情緒、浮世絵の紙の凹凸は実物にしか見えないもので何度でも見にいきたくなります。

You can feel the world view of Hasui’s work just by looking at the pictures in the catalog, but the colors, emotions, and unevenness of the paper are only visible in the real thing, and I will want to go see them again and again.

今回の大田区郷土博物館の展示では、１点１点丁寧に館所蔵の貴重な巴水の写生帖と一緒に展示してあり、写生したものの再現度の高さや巴水の生の筆線を感じられる展示になっておりとても勉強になりました。

In this exhibition at Ota-ku Folk Museum, each pieces is displayed together with the precious Hasui sketchbook in the museum’s collection, showing the high degree of reproduction of the sketches and the raw handwriting of Hasui.It was a great learning experience for me.

2021年は、巴水生誕138年、没後64年です。

川瀬巴水は、これからもっと魅力が評価され、注目されることになるかと思います。

2021 is the 138th anniversary of Hasui’s birth and the 64th anniversary of his death.

I think that Hasui Kawase will be evaluated more attractively and will be attracting attention in the future.

川瀬巴水の人生略歴を追いながら巴水作品を見ると、巴水の人生の中でどの時の作品であるか、そして時代背景と共に思いを馳せてみるとまた違ったものになります。略歴はだいぶ省略しましたが、省略しても巴水が日本全国様々な箇所に旅に出ていたこと、その行動力と写生や仕事の量が相当なもので巴水の人生が日々の絵の鍛錬や熱意、苦悩、努力の賜物であったことがよくわかります。

If you look at Hasui’s works while following the life history of Kawase Hasui, it will be different if you think about what time it was in his life and the background of the times. I have omitted a lot of his biography, but even if I omit it, Hasui has traveled to various places all over Japan, and his ability to act, sketches, and the amount of work are considerable. It is clear that it was the result of training, enthusiasm, suffering, and hard work.

川瀬巴水に改めて敬意と感謝を込めて、これからも作品を見に行きたいと思います。

With respect and gratitude to Hasui Kawase, I would like to continue to see the works.
