Maki-e material Gold

Gold powder, which is a sowing powder, is one of the important materials for Maki-e Artisan.

The price of gold continues to rise, partly due to the effects of coronavirus infections in recent years. Of course, if the price of gold soars, so does the price of gold powder used in Maki-e work. Like urushi, it is a valuable material.

I tried to summarize “gold” again in a little more detail.

History of gold (in Japan)

The gold is the individual metal to know from ancient times mankind.

In Japan, it already exists as an ornament in the Yayoi, Kofun, and Asuka periods, but it is said that it was made overseas or imported gold was processed domestically.

It is said that natural gold was confirmed in Japan in the middle of the Nara period.

Since then, gold dust and gold nuggets have been excavated in Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, and South Kyushu.

Most of the gold (gold dust) produced during the Warring States period is attributed to the Tohoku region.

It seems that this gold dust was also used in Hiraizumi’s “Chusonji Konjikido”, a world heritage site that is historically famous at the end of the Heian period. In this era, gold was also used for payments to foreign countries such as China. Gold mine development was also carried out to raise war expenses.

In is photography prohibited, but in golden majestic space, decoration and golden combination of Raden of luminous shellfish is very beautiful.

Since gold continues to have a golden brilliance without being affected by acid, it creates the image of “eternity and immortality” and is still valuable as a symbol of the power of those in power. In Hiraizumi’s Konjikido, the Buddha statue of Amitabha triad enshrined in the hall is of course gold, but even the Jizo and Niten statues, which were usually decorated in other colors at that time, are all golden, and they are quite obsessed with gold. It is said that this was also a display of financial strength from Oshu’s gold production.

The gold is soft, also it can be thought of as a factor that has increased the value that crafted and processing is easy.

And until the early Edo period around it has been to have been the peak of production in Japan of gold.

It is said that the gold dust used for Maki-e lacquer work was also made by the Maki-e artisan himself for a long time by unloading gold dust and gold nuggets with a file, but it is believed that a profession of gold powder manufacturing was established after the Muromachi period. It is known that the gold powder of the Kamakura period had a fairly round shape and was proficient in making gold powder.

Even if you look at the crafts from the Heian period to the early Edo period, there are many works that use gold luxuriously.

Also, in the Edo period, most of the gold was used as “large format / small format” money, and the total amount is thought to be over 200 tons.

After the Meiji era, the use of gold became free, but under the gold standard, a large amount of gold was held by the government, and most of it was used to raise the cost of the war.

Today, gold is used not only for jewelry but also for industrial products in Japan.

Symbol of power

Golden tea room

There is a golden tea room made by the order of Hideyoshi Toyotomi, a world-renowned man from the Momoyama period of the Warring States period in Japan. A restored version of it is on display at the MOA Museum of Art in Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture. (Photographable)

It is a tea room where Hideyoshi used plenty of gold to show off his power to the court aristocrats.

The actual one is said to have been burnt down when Osaka Castle fell.

It is said to be a tea room that compiles the highest level of craftsmanship at that time, and it is movable assembling, and it is said that it was used not only in Osaka Castle but also in Nagoya Castle in Saga Prefecture.

About 50 kg of gold is used for tea utensils, and of course lacquer is firmly applied to the base, undercoat, middle coat, and top coat in the tea room, and about 15,000 pieces of pure gold leaf are used.

The luster and depth of urushi lacquer make gold shine more.

Kinkakuji Temple

Rokuonji Temple in Kyoto (commonly known as Kinkakuji Temple)

A symbol of power by Yoshimitsu Ashikaga, the highest authority in the Muromachi Shogunate.

The official name is Rokuonji, but the popular name of Kinkakuji is more famous. It is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site and a famous tourist attraction.

Now the Kinkakuji is something that was rebuilt after the war by died burnt of the Showa era. The original one was designated as a national treasure, but the current one is not a national treasure.

The photo was taken in 2017, and the roof restoration was completed in 2020, so I think it will be different from what it is now.

Everyone pays attention to gold and the existence of lacquer is forgotten, but it is the brilliance that comes out because of the combination of gold and lacquer.

The reason why gold shines so much is not only because of the gold itself, but also because of the work of lacquer and craftsmen who have the skills to make the most of it. Of course, Japanese Johoji lacquer is used for the restoration of Kinkakuji. It is said that the brilliance of gold leaf is greatly influenced by the finish of the base, coating, and lacquer. The restoration process is very long and difficult. This is one of the cultural property to be proud of Japan shiny craftsmanship.

Nearly 200,000 pieces of gold leaf are used, and 1.2 tons of domestic Joboji lacquer is used. It costs money that cannot be done with hundreds of millions of yen.

Soaring gold prices

“Gold” is regarded as the most valuable metal in the world in history

The transaction price of gold was about 3,477 yen / g on average 11 years ago (2010).

This year, 2021, the price has been around 6700 yen / g, and it has been rising forever.

Gold is considered to be valuable in itself, so it does not continue to fall sharply like stocks. Therefore, in the event of an economic recession due to war or corona infection, it will be a safe and secure asset for investors and the price will rise.

In the future, gold prices will continue to rise unless economic and financial instability are resolved.

Anxiety element of political confrontation in the United States are also believed to be a factor in the price rise of gold.

There may be a short-term plunge depending on the volume of transactions, but many experts analyze the trend that it will continue to rise in the long-term.

Considering that not only money but also various things in the world are connected to things around you, it is important to have a certain amount of knowledge, experience, and imagination, and how broadly you can think about it. And I am keenly keenly aware recently that is required in this era.
