Raden, which is one of the most popular techniques of lacquer art, is just pasting shells, so I did a little research on “abalone shell”, which is the material of Raden, for studying.

Origin of Raden

“Raden” is a technique that uses the nacre of the shell.

Originally, the character “螺 ra” in “raden” means a spiral shell, and “鈿 den” means to decorate.

Currently, it seems that most of the things that are decorated with shells are called “Raden”.

This Raden shell, luminous shell, butterfly shell, abalone shell, Mexican shell, New Zealand shell, etc. can be found in the seas around the world. The color and brilliance differ depending on the type of shellfish.

I have mainly used abalone shells, night shells, white butterfly shells, and South Sea shells.

Thickness of lacquer material shell

A lacquer shop that handles lacquer art materials sells thin, medium, and thick shells with different thicknesses in about three stages.

  • 薄貝 thin shell→ about 約0.08mm
  • 厚貝 thick shell→ about 約1mm

Although it is processed to this thickness, there is a slight difference in thickness because the shells are natural and are different one by one. It may not be the same thickness on all sides, so if you want to align it accurately, sharpen it further. Also, the thickness of medium-sized shellfish is not handled by some lacquer shops. the degree of brilliance is also different one by one. Some have a lot of blue and some have a lot of red, and there are mail orders at the store, but I want to see the real thing and buy it.

Also, recently, a convenient thin shell sheet that has been made into a sheet is on sale, but since it is made into a sheet with an adhesive, if it is applied with lacquer, it will become tattered when sharpened. It is convenient only when you use it just by pasting it.I tried my best to paste it, but I confused the adhesive part and the shell part and applied it, and sharpened it and made a big mistake.

How to see the shellfish

<How to see the color of shellfish>
It is best to put it on the black lacquer surface that you actually ride,
I often use black paper when I want to see it for a moment.
Recently, there are black notebooks and black report papers, so
It's convenient to put it on your desk.

When pasting shellfish, basically, place the shellfish on a black surface, look for something that shines, and paste it.
And if you change the direction of the shell, it may shine, so
Let's take a look at the shell itself or the black paper on which it is placed.

Similar to the gold powder processing technology of lacquer work, the history of the use of shellfish is further subdivided from thick shellfish to thin shellfish according to the development of decoration techniques and techniques from the viewpoint of cultural properties. I think that the material of the shellfish also changed to a variety of materials and responded. I’m grateful that there are already so many variations and options in this era.

Japanese Raden

As you can see in the chronological table in the post “The Beginning of Maki-e”, Raden came into Japan as one of the lacquer art techniques from China during the Tang dynasty. Then, along with the original development of lacquer work in the Heian period, it is used in combination with lacquer work and has become Japanese style. It can be said that the characteristic of Japanese lacquer art is that it is used together with this lacquer work.

In history, Raden is famous for its Raden in the Kamakura period, which is said to be the heyday of Japanese Raden, Aogai crafts in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, and Ryukyu lacquerware in Okinawa Prefecture.

History of abalone shell Raden

Most of the shells that have been used for decoration since ancient times are luminous shells, and it is said that abalone shells began to be used after the Momoyama period. It is believed that the Rinpa school Honami Koetsu and Ogata Korin were more widespread than they were used.

The national treasure “Yatsuhashi Maki-e Raden Box”, which uses abalone thick shells, is famous and is often introduced as a representative of lacquer products at the Tokyo National Museum. You can’t see the real thing so often, but when it appeared at the National Treasure Exhibition or the lacquer room at Tokyo National Museum, it was possible to take a picture and it was often made into a VR video introducing Japanese art, and at the museum shop, confectionery cans were also made based on this work. I would like to make another post in detail only with this “Yatsuhashi Maki-e Raden Box”.

Focusing on the abalone shell, the abalone shell is used in the pattern part of the flower of Iris.

Since it is a thick shell, I think it was cut with a jigsaw. The height and shape are not constant, and it is used as if the unevenness peculiar to the shellfish was used in the shape of the petals of the iris.

Characteristics of abalone shell, a lacquer art material

Abalone shells have a particularly strong color compared to the light shades of luminous shells and butterfly shells.

I think that there are many works that express colors with the color of shellfish, even though they express colors without using colored lacquer. It is especially noticeable in abalone thin shells. If you use black lacquer for the base, the iridescent shine of the abalone nacre will become clearer.

If you look closely at “Yatsuhashi Maki-e Raden Box”, you can see the rainbow-colored brilliance peculiar to abalone shells. Since it is not transparent like a thin shell, the rainbow color is not clear in comparison with the black background, but after seeing other shells, the contrast is strong, so it is relatively clear that it is an abalone shell.

Abalone as an edible

Habitat: East Asia (Japan, Korea, China)

Abalone is a shellfish that mainly inhabits East Asia, and is said to have been eaten as food in Japan since the Jomon period. Even as it is, it is eaten in various ways such as drying and boiling.

It is regarded as a so-called high-class and valuable ingredient, such as in New Year dishes and as a fresh seafood used in Shinto rituals at Ise Jingu.

Even before it was used for Raden, I think it is an edible ingredient that everyone knows in Japan.

Noshi-Awabi

The edible abalone was thinly shaved, dried, stretched on tatami mats, and was useful as a preserved food.

In Japan, it was also used as a gift because it is valuable, expensive, delicious, and convenient as a preserved food. Nowadays, it is a common practice in Japanese gift culture to use Noshi paper, but it starts with abalone and is attached with the meaning of “I would normally like to give Noshi abalone, but I’m sorry for the alternative item.”

Nowadays, it’s taken for granted that it’s on the Noshi bag or Noshi paper, but it actually started with abalone. It is considered to be one of the shellfish that has been deeply involved in Japanese people and Japanese culture.

There seems to be a lot of research on shellfish, so I hope I can post it little by little.
