日本の島根県にある「足立美術館」を知っていますか？Do you know the “Adachi Museum of Art” in Shimane Prefecture, Japan?
私が京都にいた時に弾丸日帰りで蒔絵品を見に行った美術館です。この美術館について、行った時の感想と写真を元にまとめていきたいと思います。これから行く方の参考になりますと幸いです。

足立美術館は何と言っても庭園で有名な美術館としてテレビなどで見たことがある方もいるかもしれません。
私も海外の方が日本庭園に魅了されて、足立美術館の庭師さんに短期間習うなどのテレビ番組の企画を見たことがあります。

誰が日本一と決めたの？と思っていたらなんと日本の選定ではなく、アメリカの日本庭園専門誌『数寄屋リビングマガジン/ジャーナル・オブ・ジャパニーズ・ガーデニング』という隔月誌が発表しているものです。

発行人であるダグラス・ロスさんは海兵軍学校を卒業後、来日し鎌倉にて５年間造園の勉強をされて、米国へ帰国後 日本建築家として活動されています。

そしてこの雑誌は、ダグラス・ロスさんが日本で暮らしていた際に家の近くにあった「葉山しおさい公園」（旧葉山御用邸付属邸：大正天皇が最晩年を過ごした場所）の素晴らしい庭園があまり知られていないことがきっかけだったそうです。

雑誌の中の庭園ランキングは2003年から始まったものです。

庭園の「質」にこだわった審査範囲 Examination range that is particular about the “quality” of the garden
審査の対象となる庭園は、一般的に公開されている庭園に加えて、ホテル・旅館・料亭内の庭園も含めた日本全国1000ヶ所に及ぶそうです。
ランキングを見てみると一般的にあまり知られていないだろうところも多く存在します。

足立美術館がランキングの発足当初から１８年連続１位です。３位以降は数年単位で連続はありますが、頻繁なランキングの変動が見られます。

ちなみに２位の桂離宮も１８年連続２位です。桂離宮は私も行ったことがあるのでまた別の投稿でご紹介できればと思います。

足立美術館は名前の通り、美術館のある地に生まれた「足立全康」が創設した私設の美術館です。

様々な事業を手がけ、事業のかたわら日本画をコレクターとして多く収集していました。
また庭造りも何よりも大好きだったそうです。
一代で富を築き上げ、類い稀な商才を発揮した人物であったそうです。
He was involved in various businesses, and while doing business, he collected many Japanese paintings as a collector.
He also loved gardening more than anything else.
It seems that he was a person who built up wealth in one generation and demonstrated a unique business talent.
1970年に郷土への恩返しと文化発展のためにと71歳の時に美術館を創設したそうです。
1992年92歳で創設者「足立全康」は亡くなっていますが、亡くなる直前まで足立美術館を「世界の美術館」にしたいという夢を持ち続けられていたそうです。
He founded the museum in 1970 at the age of 71 to give back to his hometown and develop his culture.

2020年には開館50年を迎えました。

横山大観 Taikan Yokoyama
足立美術館の所蔵品の多くが近代日本画で、質・量共に特に足立コレクションの基盤とも言えるのが近代の日本画家・横山大観の作品の数々です。
Most of the collections of the Adachi Museum of Art are modern Japanese paintings, and the works of modern Japanese painter Taikan Yokoyama can be said to be the basis of the Adachi collection in terms of both quality and quantity.

庭園・横山大観コレクション。。。。と足立美術館の魅力としては、申し分ない内容なのですが、私にとってはそれだけでは中々遠くて足を運ぶ気にはまだなっていなかったのです。
そんな中、友人から足立美術館の蒔絵が綺麗ですごかったらしいと口コミを聞きました。

近代日本画があるだけで工芸品の存在を知らなかったので、聞いてから比較的すぐに足立美術館に行きました。
I didn’t know the existence of crafts just because I had modern Japanese paintings, so I went to the Adachi Museum of Art relatively soon after I heard it.
庭園はもちろん素晴らしかったです。庭園の周りをぐるっとできるような回廊になっているのですが、その回廊のところ（室内）になんと蒔絵品が展示されていました。
残念ながら、美術館館内は庭園のみ写真撮影可能で他は撮影できません。

数でいうと十数点と多くないのですが、見応えを感じ、蒔絵の調度品の大きさにびっくりしました。

大型家具に近いような棚に隅から隅まで蒔絵してあるものもあり、他の美術館で見るよりもより近くで見れました。大きさとより近づいて見れることにより感動も増し増しでした。
Some of the shelves, which look like large pieces of furniture, are lacquered from corner to corner, so you can see them closer than you can see in other museums. I was more impressed by the fact that I could see it closer to the size.
展示されている蒔絵品はほとんど無銘のものでしたが、時代が明治時代〜大正あたりのもので洗練された素晴らしい蒔絵ばかりでした。

大型のものも精緻な蒔絵が多かったので、点数は横山大観コレクションほどはないのかもしれませんが、１点１点の金額は大きさからも数千万〜億円なのではと思うほどのものばかりでした。
お金の話になるとあまりよろしくないのかもしれませんが、特に工芸品は誰もが感動を覚えるようなものはやはり想像していた以上の値段が付いています。資産家として富を築いた足立全康だからこそ揃えられた蒔絵品とも言えます。

明治期の蒔絵品は海外流出が多いという背景がありますので、国内で個人のコレクションとしてしまわれることなく美術館で見れる作品としては大変貴重なものかと思います。
The background of the Meiji era lacquer work is that it is often leaked overseas, so I think it is very valuable as a work that can be seen in museums without being stored as an individual collection in Japan.
図録・カタログなく口コミのみ Only word-of-mouth without catalogs
撮影ができなくても、図録や書籍であとで見れたらいいなと、見てから一応一通り周りミュージアムショップに行きました。足立美術館所蔵の日本画の作品集などはあったのですが、蒔絵品はポストカードも1枚もなく大変残念でした。
かなり一通り見て、その後ミュージアムショップの店員さんにまで確認して。。。なかったので残念ながら諦めて帰りました。
Even if I couldn’t shoot, I wish I could see it later in the catalog or book, so after seeing it, I went to the museum shop. There was a collection of Japanese paintings in the Adachi Museum of Art, but I was very disappointed that there was no postcard for the lacquer work.
After looking through it, I checked with the clerk of the museum shop. .. .. Unfortunately I didn’t have it, so I gave up and went home.
蒔絵は金が使われていたり漆が鏡面だと撮影するのも大変なのでそういった背景から写真等がないのかもしれません。また、作品は素晴らしくてもほとんどが無銘だったため、ホームページなどでも紹介されていません。
It is difficult to take pictures of lacquer when gold is used or lacquer is a mirror surface, so there may be no pictures for that reason. Also, although the works are wonderful, most of them do not have the author’s name, so they are not introduced on the homepage.
たまに行った方のツイッターのツイートで「蒔絵品が素晴らしかった」とありますが、写真も撮れないのでイマイチその感動が共有できてないなと思いました。
A tweet from a person who went there once in a while said, “The lacquer work was wonderful,” but I couldn’t take pictures, so I thought I couldn’t share that impression.
足立美術館のツイッターアカウントから蒔絵品がチラッと紹介されていますが、実際の展示品はもっとあり、庭園と共に一見の価値ありです。

無料シャトルバス the free shuttle bus
足立美術館はちょっと不便な場所にあり、車がないから行けないと思いがちですがそんな方には無料のシャトルバスが利用できます。
The Adachi Museum of Art is a bit inconvenient, and it’s easy to think that you can’t go because you don’t have a car, but you can use the free shuttle bus.
シャトルバスがあることにより公共交通機関を利用して想像していたよりも楽に行けました。
私はシャトルバスを行き帰り共に利用させていただきました。

I used the shuttle bus back and forth.
１時間に２本ほど出ているので、時間を確認して待っている分には苦にはなりませんでした。
近くに綺麗に整備された停留所やお土産屋さんもあります。

There are also well-maintained stops and souvenir shops nearby.
そしてシャトルバスに乗りながらの美術館までの道のりでは白鷺に出会えたり、バスの大きい窓から見える景色もまた魅力です。
You can also meet Shirasagi on the way to the museum while taking the shuttle bus, and the view from the large window of the bus is also attractive.
