Unusual Maki-e tools “sea bream fangs” “dog fangs”

Maki-e tools are packed with the wisdom of many ancestors. Among them, “sea bream fangs (Taiki)” and “dog fangs (Kenki)” may be particularly unusual tools.

What is it used for?

Basically, it is a tool for polishing areas that cannot be reached with your fingers.

In terms of size, of course, “sea bream fangs” are smaller and “dog fangs” are larger.

  • When polishing areas that are difficult to reach with charcoal, such as split grooves and valleys after sprinkling and hardening gold powder

It is said that it was often used for the uneven parts of the Taka-Makie of combs and inro, which were often seen in old lacquer work. This “sea bream fang” is mainly used for gold round powder “Maru-fun”.

Dog fangs”

  • When polishing Hira-fun or tin powder → Wide grooves / valleys (corners of boxes, etc.)

Which part of the fangs?

4 fangs above and below the sea bream

Since there are individual differences depending on the red sea bream, it depends on whether it can be used in the work, but I think that the red circle can be used for the sea bream in the photo.

The remaining lacquer art references do not say “Why is the sea bream good?”

Sea bream” in Japan

In Japan, “sea bream” has been a very familiar fish since ancient times.

Sea bream bones have been excavated since the Jomon period. In other words, it is a fish that has been associated with Japanese people for over 10,000 years as an edible fish. The fangs of the fish that remained after eating for food may have been used for something.

In addition, it is said that Shinto, which has no founder like Buddhism, and the belief that nature and God are one, have been formed since the Jomon period in line with the Japanese climate. Even in such Shinto, “sea bream” is said to have been an important fish as a votive offering indispensable for festivals.

Red sea bream”

The “red sea bream” used in this tool is a fish that decorates celebrations in Japan, where the red color close to the color of the sun is especially appreciated. Among the seven deities of good fortune that are said to bring good fortune in Japan, Ebisu, who is also said to be the god of fishing, also has a fishing rod in his right hand and a “sea bream” on his left side.

In the Edo period, in the Shogun family, the character “sea bream 鯛(tai)” was called “大位 tai (large rank)”, and in the palace, it was called “高位 ko-i (High rank)”, and it was regarded as a so-called high-class food. Even now, I think it is a high-class ingredient that is indispensable for Japanese cuisine.

In terms of the classification of biology, this “red sea bream” officially refers to the largest “red sea bream” among the red sea breams.

It is said that about 120 species of “sea bream (Thailand)” inhabit the warm sea coasts of the world, from small ones to “hedai”, “chidai”, “kichinu”, and “black sea bream”.

Among them, the red-colored sea bream are “Kidai”, “Renkodai”, “Taiwandai”, “Chidai”, “Hirekodai”, “Madai”, etc.

Except for the “Kidai” family, sea bream is considered to be a special fish with molars.

What is a molar tooth? .. ..
The back teeth of the mammalian dentition.
The back teeth.
Teeth that serve to grind food.

Sea bream uses these molars to chew and eat shells. In addition to shellfish, shrimp and crabs are also eaten by chewing hard shells.

Among the red sea breams, red sea bream, which is about twice as large as other Thais, is said to have an average total length of about 100 cm. Larger ones are said to be close to 120 cm. It is also said to be the king of fish.

It seems that the mainstream of red sea bream distributed for food is about 30 cm to 70 cm. I have never seen a red sea bream as large as 100 cm. It has a lifespan of 20 to 40 years and is a relatively long-lived fish.

I think that red sea bream is big, and its teeth are also good. It is not a molar tooth that is used in lacquer art, but it seems that there was an old person who knew the characteristic of the sea bream that it had this molar tooth and compared it with other fish and thought that it would be useful as a polishing tool for lacquer art. And even now, it has been handed down as a tool for lacquer work.

In the habitat of sea bream called Tai no Ura in Kamogawa City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan, a group of red sea bream has been inhabiting for a long time and it is designated as a national special natural monument. It is also prohibited to catch it. Red sea bream is both farmed and natural because of its high general demand and high distribution volume. After all, it is said that natural red sea bream, which would have lived by eating shells and crustaceans, is suitable for polishing (lacquer art).

From now on, natural red sea bream may become a more valuable fish.

“Sea bream fangs” are not worn out so quickly, but they are still consumables. I’m sure that people in the old days don’t consume so much, so I think they lived with nature by taking a little bit of what they needed when they needed it.

Dog fangs”

The upper and lower four fangs of a young adult dog with a large physique such as Akita Inu and Tosa dog from Japan. In the references, Western dogs have thin fangs and are unsuitable.

Since the references are more than 30 years old, I thought the dog situation would have changed.

In Japan in the past, it seems that dogs eat leftover food left by humans, but nowadays dog food is commonplace. I think most dogs chew the dog food and eat it. Dog food also has a certain degree of hardness, so I think that the teeth of today’s dogs can be used more easily than dogs of the old days who ate leftover food. (It’s just my personal opinion)

At my house, my previous dog (Yorkshire Terrier) had a tooth that had a bad tartar when he was alive, and I remembered that and made a tool as a “dog fangs”. It was a very small dog that weighed only 1.4 kg, but of course I think it is inferior to the teeth of Japanese dogs such as Akita dogs. However, thin fangs can be used depending on the design of the work. It feels harder than the teeth of a sea bream, so I use it properly according to the purpose. My dog, “Dog Fang,” had the same tooth size as “Sea Bream Fang.” I use it while remembering my dog that it was so small.

As a matter of fact, I think that in order to obtain “dog fangs”, you only have to take your teeth after you die. The dog at home is also a Yorkie, who is bigger than his predecessor, has strong teeth, and eats while chewing dog food. Maybe this dog uses strong teeth until he dies.

People in the old days may have tried various fish and animal fangs and arrived at “sea bream” and “dog”. It is said that the powder for polishing Roiro urushi used to be powdered deer horns. In other words, in the long history of lacquer crafts that have received the blessings of nature, many of the tools and materials have also received the blessings and products of nature.

Not to mention tools, there are many convenient and artificial ones in modern times. However, the tools that people in the old days spent a lot of time in nature and selected by trial and error are still extremely easy to use. Also, even in the long history, I think that the tools that have been handed down and remain are truly first-class products. And many of these tools require the level of the user.

Basically, it is natural, so there are individual differences. You have to judge the superiority or inferiority according to the work. I think that being able to master using such tools is also a challenge for me.

Actual usage

The actual usage is very simple.

Sprinkle gold powder (Maru-fun)
  2. 乾かす dry
Harden gold powder with Suri-urushi
  4. 乾かす dry
Rub “sea bream fangs” and “dog fangs” on the gold powder part (almost no force is applied)

In terms of feeling, it is a substitute for sharpening with charcoal.

However, of course, if you overdo it, the gold powder will disappear, so it is up to you to decide how much you want to do. Since “sea bream fangs” and “dog fangs” are also natural, I change the ones I use according to where I want to sharpen my work. In addition, I occasionally use water to make it slippery, and I use it flexibly while devising various things.

It shines quite a bit when rubbed, so it may be finished with this, or it may be suriurushi for final polishing. It depends on the degree of sharpening at that time.

I think that it is a tool that can be used because it is convenient for small works and recently curved vessels such as kintsugi.

“Sea bream fangs” are also sold, but if you can get red sea bream, you can complete it by using disposable chopsticks or a brush stick and fixing it with adhesive at the tip. So there are many people who make it themselves.

I thought that it would be useful when making this “sea bream fang”, so I pull out the hair part of the lacquer brush and the one that the hair of the paintbrush is damaged and store it with a stick. I don’t know when I can meet good sea bream and canine teeth, so I stock them. Since the inside is hollow, it is convenient because it can be used immediately after being stabbed.

The “Sea Bream Fang” in this photo happened to be on sale, so I bought it. “dog fangs” are made by myself, although I just stabbed them with a lacquer brush, fixed them with an adhesive, and hardened them with lacquer.

I hope you find it helpful.
