最近の読み返していた本に面白い資料が載っていたので、ご紹介したいと思います。
There was an interesting material in the book I was reading back recently, so I would like to introduce it.
漆は、木の樹液なので基本的にはその樹液を塗るのが木であれば、相性は良く、問題ないとは思います。しかし、その中でもやはりとても良い相性というのがあるようです。
Since lacquer is the sap of wood, basically if the sap is applied to wood, it goes well with the wood and I think there is no problem. However, there seems to be a very good match among them.
私は元々、木製製品が大好きなので、木目を綺麗に見せるための拭き漆も大好きな技法の一つです。参考にしたい資料が載っていた本は、社団法人 日本漆工協会が出している「優しく身につく漆のはなし」という本です。
Originally, I love wooden products, so Fuki-urushi to make the grain look beautiful is one of my favorite techniques. The book that contains the materials I would like to refer to is the book “The Story of Urushi that can be learned gently” published by the Japan Lacquer Industry Association.
拭き漆 Fuki-urushi
「拭き漆」とは、漆芸技法の一つです。「摺り漆」とも言います。
漆を木地に塗り込んで拭ききり、乾かすという作業を繰り返す技法です。
“Fuki-urushi” is one of the lacquering techniques. It is also called “Suri-urushi”.
It is a technique that repeats the work of applying urushi to the wood, wiping it off, and drying it.
簡単にいうと「塗って拭き取る」だけと思いますが、拭き残しを残さないように丁寧に作業する必要がありますし、しっかり乾かないと艶も上がってきません。
To put it simply, I think it’s just “painting and wiping”, but you need to work carefully so as not to leave any residue, and if you don’t dry it well, the gloss will not increase.
少しの拭き残しがあるだけで、漆はかなりガッチリ固まります。少し拭き残しただけでも、乾くと研がないと取れないくらいになってしまうことがあります。またその拭き残しは特に目立ってしまいます。簡単そうで実は難しい技法でもあります。
The lacquer will harden quite firmly with only a small amount of unwiped residue. If even a small amount remains, it may not be able to be removed without sharpening. Also, the unwiped residue is especially noticeable. It seems easy, but it’s actually a difficult technique.
蒔絵や漆塗りでも使う工程なので、漆芸をする人が必ず通る工程とも言えます。また、蒔絵の作品の中でも拭き漆で、木目を活かした背景にしてその上から蒔絵をしている作品も多くあります。
Since it is a process that is also used for lacquering and Maki-e, it can be said that it is a process that people who perform lacquering always go through. In addition, among the works of Maki-e work, there are many works in which Maki-e work is used to create a background that makes the most of the grain of wood.

辻 新太郎さん Mr.Shintaro Tsuji
この本の資料は、石川県山中町の辻新太郎さんの経験を元にまとめられた資料だそうです。
The materials in this book are based on the experience of Shintaro Tsuji in Yamanaka Town, Ishikawa Prefecture.
伝統工芸である山中漆器の木地師として全国漆器展にて労働大臣賞受賞など輝かしい経歴と実績を持つ方です。ご自分で拭き漆もされています。後継者育成にもご尽力されている方です。
As a woodworker of Yamanaka lacquer ware, which is a traditional craft, he has a brilliant career and achievements such as receiving the Minister of Labor Award at the National Laquer Ware Exhibition. He is also doing Fuki-urushi himself. He is also committed to developing successors.

There is also his Fuki-urushi work in the exhibition of traditional crafts of Ishikawa prefecture called “Hyakko no Ma(room)” in the waiting room of the Shinkansen at JR Kanazawa Station.
日本産の木の種類 Kind of Japanese tree
本の中での資料では、木の種類と性質、拭き漆が特に効果的かどうかが表にされていました。今回は、この資料を元に、拭き漆の効果が良いとされる木の種類をまとめてみたいと思います。
The material in the book tabulated the type and nature of the wood and whether Fuki-urushi was particularly effective. This time, based on this material, I would like to summarize the types of wood that are said to have a good effect on Fuki-urushi.

木は種類や成長環境によって様々な特性を持っているので、拭き漆をするときにはそれぞれの木の持つ美しさを活かしきるよう努めるべきとのことです。
Trees have various characteristics depending on the type and growth environment, so when doing Fuki-urushi, you should try to make full use of the beauty of each tree.
国産：拭き漆が効果的とされる種類 Japanese tree: Types where Fuki-urushi is effective

ちなみに私の大好きな木工作家、黒田辰秋作品の多くは、この表の中にもある、欅の木を拭き漆していました。
By the way, many of my favorite woodworkers, Tatsuaki Kuroda’s works, “Fuki-urushi” the zelkova tree, which is also in this table.
国産：やや良のもの Japanese tree: Somewhat good
上記の木の種類よりも拭き漆にはやや効果的ではない木の種類は、４種類ほどあります。
There are about four types of wood that are less effective for Fuki-urushi than the above types of wood.
- ヒノキ（檜）Hinoki
- アテ（ヒバ）Ate (Hiba)
- キリ（桐）Kiri
上記の３種類は、木質が柔らかく、挽物には不向きとされています。ヒノキで、漆塗りをしたことがありますが、やはり柔らかいためか吸い込みも多かったように思います。
The above three types have soft wood quality and are not suitable for grinding. I used to lacquer it with cypress, but I think it was a lot of inhalation, probably because it was soft.
- サワラ（椹）Sawara
もう１種類、サワラも木質が柔らかすぎるそうですが、板状のものとして使用するにはキレイな杢目が出て良いとされています。
Another type, Spanish mackerel, is said to be too soft in wood, but it is said that a beautiful heather is good for use as a plate-shaped object.
特に木目が美しく出る種類 Especially the kind that the wood grain is beautiful
- モミ（樅）Momi
- トチ（栃）Tochi
- カキ（柿）Kaki
モミ、トチは、美しい木目とありますが、柿は木目が美しいだけでなく、面白いと評されています。面白いとはつまり、縞模様や狭い範囲で杢目がいくつもあったりと他の木とはまた違った木目のようです。
Fir and horse chestnut are said to have beautiful grain, but persimmon is said to be interesting as well as having a beautiful grain. What is interesting is that it looks like a different grain from other trees, with striped patterns and a number of grain in a narrow area.
ちなみにウルシノキは、材質が黄色く、拭き漆は板状の物にするのが良いとされています。
By the way, it is said that the material of lacquer tree is yellow, and it is better to use a plate-shaped for Fuki-urushi.
外国産の木の種類 Types of foreign trees
この資料には外国産も一覧で載っているのですが、外国産の木の方が拭き漆に特に効果的という項目のものが多いです。
This material also lists foreign-made wood, but many of them have the item that foreign-made wood is particularly effective for Fuki-urushi.

- アボデラ Abodella tree
- こくたん Ebony tree
- ローズウッド Rosewood

聞いたことのない木の種類もありますが、黒檀やローズウッドは万年筆にも使われている木材で拭き漆が特に効果的とは、私にとっては新たな発見でした。
There are some types of wood that I have never heard of, but ebony and rosewood are the woods that are also used in fountain pens, and it was a new discovery for me that Fuki-urushi is particularly effective.
また特にローズウッドとチークは木目が美しく最良とされています。
Especially rosewood and teak have beautiful grain and are considered to be the best.
外国産：拭き漆が効果的な種類 Foreign tree: A type for which Fuki-urushi is effective

外国産：やや良のもの Foreign tree: Somewhat good
- アメリカスギ（ベイスギ）American redwood
- アメリカツガ（ベイツガ）Western hemlock lumber
- アメリカマツ（ベイマツ）American pine
- コーア Koa wood
- ラワン Rawan
アメリカの木の種類のものは、挽物には不向きとされています。板物での拭き漆はまあまあの評価とされています。ラワンに関しては、拭き漆をすると黒くなってしまうとのことです。
American wood types are not suitable for grinding. Fuki-urushi made of plate-shaped wood is evaluated as neither good nor bad. As for Lauan, it turns black when wiped with urushi.
外国産：不向きなもの Foreign tree: unsuitable
不向きな木の種類として唯一低評価なのが、ホワイトラワンでした。ラワン同様に拭き漆は黒くなってしまうようです。
White Lauan was the only unsuitable type of wood to be rated low. Like Lauan, the wiping lacquer seems to turn black
外国産の木の種類に関しての拭き漆の仕上がり具合の効果は、とても良いものと不向きなものとで別れるようです。日本産の木の種類に関しては、不向きであるとされるものはありませんでした。
It seems that the effect of the finish of Fuki-urushi on the type of foreign wood is divided into very good ones and unsuitable ones. Nothing was considered unsuitable for the types of Japanese trees.
また、木の種類によって、拭き漆の艶の上がり具合も変わってくるようです。この資料を全体的に見ると、木の種類の中でも材質が硬いものの方が拭き漆の効果がより出やすいようです。
Also, depending on the type of wood, the glossiness of the wiping lacquer seems to change. Looking at this material as a whole, it seems that the harder the wood type, the more effective the Fuki-urushi is.
木の種類も世界中に色々あるので、木工の世界、拭き漆の世界もとても奥が深いのだなとつくづく思います。木目が好きで、拭き漆をしてみたい方の木材を選ぶ参考になりましたら幸いです。
