I would like to summarize the highlights of “Confectionery Box with Crows and Herons” by Zeshin Shibata, an imperial artist of Makie.

Confectionery Box with Crows and Herons”

Right now, it is on display in the 18th room of the main building of the Tokyo National Museum until October 31st. (As of 2021)

It is a famous confectionery container as a masterpiece of Zeshin, but it may actually be relatively smaller than you can see in the picture.

Size / shape

The size is a small confectionery container with a height of 13.0 cm, a width of 18.5 cm, and a length of 12.4 cm.

The base material is woodworking joints. The shape is made of an inro lid, and it is a Box with overlapping joints.

Attention point

Timeless newness
Design power
Including classical elements
A simple shape that you won’t get tired of

The shape is also mysterious and I feel a newness that does not seem to be very old.

The two boxes look like they are united, and the surface on which the crow is drawn has a raised lid. It also looks like a classic rhombus mochi.

It is also skillfully constructed by crossing parallel lines, long lines, short lines and straight lines at right angles in an L shape.

The shape of the box tries to contrast the crow and the heron.

This has a universal design that you won’t get tired of looking at from various angles.

Design: Crow and heron Battle

Attention point

Contrast between crow and heron

The design of this box is said to depict the story of the battle between crow and heron in “Otogi-zoshi” during the Muromachi period.

It is a so-called pseudo-gunki monogatari between animals.

This is the story of Higashino-ichinosuke, who proposed to Yamashirono-kami’s daughter, but was rejected and became a battle.

In the story, the winner is the heron and the loser is the crow. It is said that the losing crows climbed Mt. Koya and went to training.

In this confectionery container, the loser’s crow occupies the lid and draws more.

In the story, it is the crow who attacked, so it may be drawn that way. However, I think it’s really interesting that the winner is not drawn on the entire surface.

(It’s just my personal opinion)

Group crow folding screen”

A work similar to this work, in which a group of black crows is drawn on gold, is also found in the group crow folding screen made in the 17th century and the Edo period.

This folding screen is owned by the Seattle Art Museum, and I visited Japan for the 2009 Suntory Museum of Art’s “Beautiful Asian Tamatebako” exhibition and returned home. I haven’t been to this exhibition, but it seems that it was a patrol exhibition. Since it is also posted on the leaflet, it may have been the folding screen that was the centerpiece of the exhibition.

It is said that this folding screen is the most similar and may have been the origin, but the crow and heron are also drawn by Tohaku Hasegawa. This folding screen was also talked about as the first folding screen purchased by Yusaku Maezawa, a businessman who is working hard toward space.

Regarding this confectionery, it is not specified how old he was.

Zeshin often goes to Kyoto to study lacquer work, so I think he might have seen various Japanese art works and made them his own to fuse and pursue the classics and his own personality.

Makie technique

Attention point

The brilliance of gold and the luster of black lacquer
Contrast of black lacquer and silver gray
Fine drawing
How to draw differently one by one

I haven’t actually picked up and looked at the technique of this lacquer lacquerware, so I would like to guess and summarize it based on the references as far as I saw it through the glass at the National Museum.

I will talk from Makie, but since it still exists so beautifully, the base process and undercoating are also solid. The shape of the confectionery and the inro-shaped abutment make the base work quite difficult, and I think that the level is high.

Guessing as the order of lacquer work

  1. First of all, the background part is sprinkled with gold powder on the entire surface, hardened with lacquer, and the gold powder is sharpened cleanly.
  2. Crow part: Raise it high with “Sabi-urushi” and draw it → Black lacquer → Draw and sprinkle gold powder
  3. Heron part: Draw the body part with black lacquer (or transparent lacquer) and sprinkle silver powder → Draw the beak and legs and sprinkle gold powder
  4. Overall polished finish

If you look closely at the crows and herons, they are really different one by one. The fine drawing of the feathers shows the high level of lacquer work, and the way of drawing that feels the movement of the bird itself shows the high level of painting power.

The transparency of lacquer increases over time, so the lacquer that was drawn before sowing gold powder becomes clearer over time. In other words, if you use lacquer mixed with pigments, the pigments will become clearer.

It’s just a guess, but when it comes to pigments for crows and herons, I think that black lacquer with pine smoke is used to make the blackness clearer, and transparent lacquer gives depth and luster.

What is "Sabi-urushi"?
It is made into a paste by mixing raw lacquer, water and abrasive powder.
It is also used as a putty to fill holes in base lacquer and kintsugi.
When this paste is dried, the metal becomes a rusty black-gray color, so it is called "Sabi(rusty)".

If Sabi-urushi is used to raise the pattern like this crow,
I think that I increased the amount of raw lacquer distributed to make it a little softer, and used a brush instead of a spatula to create a lively drawing.
When Sabi-urushi is used in high lacquer work, it is relatively high and easy to swell compared to lacquer alone.

Maki-e Artisan: Zeshin’s essence

I think that the characteristic of Zeshin’s work is that it has a natural beauty of modeling before the technique of lacquer work.

The appeal of Zeshin’s work is that it does not make you feel the difficulty even though it makes full use of extremely difficult techniques due to the beauty of the sculpture of what is drawn lightly. In other words, even if you look at it, you cannot tell at a glance what is amazing.

At first glance, some works are sober. However, if you take a closer look, it seems that you can gradually clarify the high level of technology that is hidden.

It feels like I’m constantly being tested to see if I can find it through my work over time.

Four Seasons Bird-and-Flower Folding Screen”

One of my favorite works is “Four Seasons Bird-and-Flower Folding Screen”, which is often exhibited at the Tokyo National Museum at the same time as Zeshin’s lacquer work. It is a work that is believed to have been drawn by Zeshin in his 40s or 50s.

This folding screen has an exquisite overall hue when viewed from a distance as a folding screen, and the harmony of gold and blue / green colors is wonderful. You can see it while being healed in front of the folding screen after walking tired at the museum.

I also think that the composition and expression of the cloud-shaped gold leaf part contains elements of a solid bone drawing line that is a little lacquer work. If this picture is used as a lacquer work as it is, you can enjoy imagining which gold powder to use.

Although it is a traditional Japanese folding screen, it doesn’t feel old at all, and I even feel that it fits the modern sofa of Tokyo National Museum.

The birds that fly casually to blend in with the seasonal flowers drawn on the folding screen are also adorable.

I think that this four-season bird-and-flower folding screen is exhibited relatively frequently.

If you are interested, please take a look at the real thing at the Tokyo National Museum.
